When I became handicapped my brother told me; “in golf handicaps are given to good golfers to make the competition equal.” That simple quote has been the theme of how I deal with my situation.
If you focus on your loss or the inability to fit in, you miss an incredible journey. Being disabled is not good, but if you don’t have a choice; be aware of what you focus on.
I am legally blind, so when I couldn’t look out very well; I looked within. Most people are legally blind looking inwards; blindness actually gives you an advantage that most people don’t recognize. Don’t join the pity side; take advantage of this unusual opportunity.
A person in a support group for people who were legally blind was loosing more sight and he freaked out when he talked about it. I told him that subject was powerful for everyone in this room, but he was much more than his vision and he had to change his focus to accept more than his depressing thoughts.
If he kept the habits that adjusted him to the social world he knew, he would view his blindness with the shallowness everyone relates to blindness with. We have to develop new habits that connect us to a deeper wisdom, so we don’t live in the average perceptions any more.
How he dealt with those issues determined his response, so it was very important to expand his focus. If all he focused on was what was going wrong with his eyes; he was assured negative reactions from his body. If he could choose a more conscious focus, his body would have a more positive reaction.
Dealing with a disability requires you to develop a new perspective because if you deal with your situation from your old perspective; you are setting yourself up to suffer. Now this creates frustration at first; but it opens a door to a life of new possibilities…walk through that door and create a wonderful life.
Your disability can be a curse or a blessing…it all depends on how you perceive it.
Marc Lerner has had many curses to turn into blessings and now that has become his work. By using the Wisdom of your Body you can perceive a terrible reality from a new perspective. Go to www.lifeskillsinc.com
