I grew up in a society that graded me by the right answers I gave on tests, where understanding was very important. That was in school, but that was where I was to learn how to think.
Understanding is not the same as knowing, but we are seldom graded about what we know until we face a serious challenge like an illness or a disability.
When we face a health challenge we are best served by knowing because that level is experiential, where understanding can just be symbolic. Healing and coping with a health challenge forces you to explore that depth and see it as a gift.
