A Spiritual Approach to Complete Breathing: Freedom from Attachments
Buddha gave us a spiritual secret when he told us to be free from attachments to find spiritual depth. The simple path to free yourself from attachments is to remove consciousness from the thoughts you are attached to. We become attached to memories, possessions and things by leaving our consciousness in those thoughts. I believe consciousness is the power of life and connects us to the people, places and things we are attached to. People facing a difficult challenge, such as a disability or a chronic illness, often pray to be freed from their struggle. The struggle is represented by thoughts, such as “I can’t do this anymore.” A simple prayer of “God, please take my life” removes consciousness from our thoughts and attachments, such as those thoughts.
On our in-breath, when consciousness is freed from our mind-made reality, we have the ability to be conscious of our beyond-thought reality. This includes a spiritual connection, connecting to the Wisdom of the Body and active participation in our life and healing. I define the Wisdom of the Body as the part of us beyond our thoughts. When our out-breath is attracted to people, places and things that we love, we breathe a complete breath. When we breathe in and go beyond our attachments, it is natural to breathe out a pure and simple love to the people, places and things important to us.
The simple act of breathing a complete breath allows consciousness to go beyond thoughts and return to deal with our life on an everyday level. This can be seen in the simple fact that people with loving relationships heal better and deal with challenges as though they had a purpose to their life. In Latin, the word worry comes from the word choke, where the breath is naturally cut off and does not allow for a complete breath. People find a complete breath through happy relationships, religion and work that gives them purpose. We have the power to consciously create a deeper purpose in our life and a complete breath that allows us to live a fuller life to deal with our challenges.
Most people control their breath subconsciously through their external situation. It is possible to create subconscious habits that control your breath, so when you face a challenge or life that does not meet your standards, you can fall back on this habit and live a quality life. To deliberately program a subconscious habit, all you need to do is breathe consciously before you go to sleep and when you wake you in the morning because the doors to your subconscious mind are open. With a simple breath, you connect to your powerful inner resources and find the challenges you face to be a celebration of life, rather than a punishment.
The miracle of life is with you in every breath and it is up to you how you accept it. The expression of the heart, connecting to you deepest wisdom and tapping powerful inner resources, is available for you all the time. We just have to get beyond our thoughts and fears, so that we can embrace the power we have within us. Solitude can be a celebration or it can be a time where your own thoughts punish you. Sometimes, we are in a situation where life seems unfair. We are either sick or alone and anyone would pity us. If we develop conscious breathing, the wonders of our life can turn that difficult time into real quality. It is not our situation that punishes us; it is the way we interpret and breathe in our situation. Our thoughts could be happy or sad, but the wonders of life always exist beyond thinking and it is only our breath that takes us to the Wisdom of the Body.
We have the power to turn traumatic situations into blessings and always live a quality life.
