A Situation We Cannot Control
I find that whenever we are in a situation we cannot control, we find resources we never have used before. Our habits are associated to who we think we are, but in a situation where the conditioned you becomes useless, another part of you emerges from deep within. Of course, we would never choose to be in that situation, but when you are, let go of the conditioned you and allow a spiritual you to emerge. When you feel defeat seems inevitable, use that situation to have a greater you emerge.
After 29 years of dealing with a chronic illness that has no cure, I was forced to venture into a wonderful reality I had ignored. Simply to deal with this struggle, I had to tap inner resources that I had not had to use before. For instance, I learned a confidence that enabled me to deal with a disabled body as I kept contact with the world I grew up in. I learned that my brain created the reality my body responded to and that I had the ability to control that. I had to grow and adapt to a new reality; I was legally blind with several other handicaps, but I felt connected to family and friends.
Now, as I approach the third decade of this struggle, I am applying the skills I learned to better the quality of my life. Imagine if you had confidence in your relationships, spiritual aspirations and the way you worked; your struggle could be seen as an incredible gift. I propose that we have the power to turn our greatest challenges into an incredible opportunity to grow. By doing that, we become better able to deal with the challenges before us.
