Who Makes the Medical Decisions Defines the Patient’s Role in Healing
When we get sick and we go to the doctor, who is the final decision-maker? Many patients feel that they are really responsible for their health, so they get all the important information from the doctor and they make the final decision. Others accurately describe what is wrong with them and leave it to the doctor to make the final decision.
Let’s look at both decision makers and note the benefits derived by who decides.
The patient as decision-maker:
• Decisions made by the patient naturally create commitment to attain that goal. Decisions made from the doctor may be seen as though it wasn’t my decision, so it is hard to really get behind and support it.
• Patients ask better questions when they have to decide their health care. A questioning patient actively participates in healing when they are responsible to activate inner resources .An active patient can become a partner with their doctor. Remember inner and outer resources work together as partners when the doctor and patient openly communicate.
• Questions can help the doctor more accurately diagnose the patient’s condition. Sometimes what questions are asked say more than the answer that is given. The questions we ask reflect the patient’s attitude and show the doctor how the patient relates to their condition.
• Patient’s responsibility consists of activating inner resources to actively participate in healing. This activation prepares the patient to heal, prevent conditions from advancing and helps the patient to create a life after they get treated. This may be to get a job or to actively get involved in rehabilitation, either using physical or mental therapy. This could also assist the patient in developing supportive relationships and utilizing support groups.
The doctor as the decision-maker:
• Doctors view the problem on purely a scientific level. They are not burdened with the emotions an anxious patient has, so their decisions are trusted on a different level.
• The scientific method views the problem from more than a personal perspective. Often hundreds of people are studied, so the % derived are based on more than opinions.
• Doctors study what works for other doctors, so their treatments are the best as they learn from what works & what doesn’t work.
• Doctors can use authority to convince the patient to change and correct themselves. Their authority eliminates ego’s response when it needs to be corrected. How a doctor uses their authority plays a big role in how the patient participates in healing. Just as important as the medical knowledge they know is controlling how they are received by the patient.
The decision-maker when they both (the doctor & the patient) become partners is like a beautiful dance. They move in harmony when they embrace each other. Just as valuable as the answer to questions is the patient’s response, which makes the doctor’s treatment more effective. Patients have to utilize inner resources to bring the doctor’s treatment to its full benefit. When doctor & patient are not in harmony, it is as though they dance to different music. Dancing to the same music creates the most powerful partnership. That means both the doctor and the patient have to be totally present during the office visit.

Simply changing your self-image changes your perspective on everything. It’s sometimes easier to change yourself than change the world. http://lifeskillsinc.com
